History
Proto-metal is the name for the heavy rock of the late 1960s and early 1970s that came before metal existed as a genre. It was never one clearly defined subgenre, since the bands filed under it could sound quite different from each other, but they shared a few things: psychedelic and blues influences, heavily distorted electric guitars, virtuosic bass playing, fast drumming and a powerful vocal style built on loud screams. The lyrics dealt with rebellion and the counterculture. Among the bands credited with starting it are Valhalla, formed in New York in 1968, and Jerusalem, founded in 1967 in the small English town of Salisbury, along with Dust, Iron Claw and Blue Cheer, which rank among the best-known proto-metal acts. Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, Captain Beyond, Buffalo and Hard Stuff belong on the same list.
