Powerviolence
Powerviolence from the 1990s: blast beats, sludgy breaks, distorted bass, menacing and aggressive in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Powerviolence is hardcore punk pushed to its limit: raw, deliberately under-produced, built on speed, breakdowns and constant tempo changes, with songs that sometimes end in under twenty seconds. Unlike grindcore, it takes little from heavy metal and simply sharpens the harshest parts of hardcore and grind. Blast-beat bursts crash into slow, bleak passages or into plain hardcore sections in the spirit of Black Flag and Minor Threat. Siege are counted as the pioneers and Infest as an early force, and the style set into shape in the early 1990s with Man Is the Bastard, Crossed Out, Neanderthal, No Comment and Capitalist Casualties. The scene's hub was Slap-a-Ham Records, run by Spazz singer and bassist Chris Dodge, whose annual Fiesta Grande festival was held at 924 Gilman from 1993 to 2000. Spazz and Charles Bronson filled lyrics with inside jokes. The emoviolence offshoot, which crosses the style with screamo, got its name as a joke from the band In/Humanity. Powerviolence fed later grindcore such as Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Nails and Full of Hell carry it today, though Eric Wood of Man Is the Bastard said in 2021 that it died with Shawn Elliott of Capitalist Casualties.
