History

Power noise, also called rhythmic noise or distorted beat music, grew up mainly in Europe in the 1990s, where post-industrial noise met electronic dance music. A typical track is instrumental and built on a distorted kick from a drum machine like the Roland TR-909, often in a militaristic 4/4; melody, if it appears at all, stays behind the rhythm, and most tracks remain danceable, though some drift into abstraction. The style looks back to the Spanish act Esplendor Geométrico, active since 1980, while the Belgian group Dive anticipated it in the early 1990s, as did several early vinyl EPs by Aphex Twin from the harsher end of techno. The name arrived in 1997 with the track United (Power Noise Movement) by Raoul Roucka of the German act Noisex. Wumpscut introduced the sound to the American industrial scene by signing Noisex to the label Mental Ulcer Forges, and the first wave was mostly German: Asche, Morgenstern, P·A·L, Feindflug. Festivals such as Maschinenfest in Oberhausen and Kinetik in Montreal became its main stages. The border with industrial techno is thin, though the two scenes often know little of each other: Ancient Methods, one of the artists behind the industrial techno revival, sampled P·A·L's Gelöbnis on one of his first releases.
