History

Imminent Starvation built its sound on distorted, machine-driven rhythm: kick drums pushed into clipping, looped noise treated as percussion and dark drones underneath, the template of what came to be called rhythmic industrial or power noise. The project was the work of one Belgian producer, Olivier Moreau, who ran it alone from the start. It released on Ant-Zen, the German label that gave the rhythmic noise scene much of its identity in the 1990s. The debut album Human Dislocation came out there in 1997 and drew attention well beyond the industrial crowd, with listeners from the IDM side picking up on its dense, carefully built structures. The follow-up Nord arrived in 1999 and kept the same pressure while leaning harder into cold, wide atmospheres. The signature is easy to spot: a saturated four-on-the-floor pulse, grinding metallic loops and a bleak, almost cinematic backdrop that turns techno structure into something closer to industrial menace.
