History

The new wave of British heavy metal started in English clubs in the mid-1970s, while the old heavy rock giants were stalling: Led Zeppelin had cut back, Black Sabbath had fired Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple had split. Young working-class bands filled the gap by giving early metal the speed and aggression of punk, then recording it themselves for a crop of small independent labels. The lyrics ran to fantasy, mythology and horror. The name arrived in 1979 with a Geoff Barton article in the music paper Sounds, and DJ Neal Kay pushed the bands toward radio. Some estimates count up to a thousand bands. Iron Maiden and Def Leppard became superstars, Saxon did well, and Motörhead took the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith to number one in the UK in June 1981, although Lemmy said his band came along a bit too early for the movement. In 1977 Iron Maiden were offered a deal on condition that they cut their hair and look like punks, and Steve Harris refused. MTV and glam metal thinned the field in the later 1980s, but Diamond Head, Venom and Raven left their mark on the extreme metal that followed.
