History
Neoperreo is a darker branch of reggaeton that grew up alongside the genre's global pop success and found its audience in Los Angeles, Mexico City and Chile rather than in Miami, where classic reggaeton still rules. The name began as a hashtag coined by its two pioneers, Tomasa del Real from Chile and Ms Nina from Argentina. The production is less pop-minded than the charts, eclectic and heavily electronic, and early on several artists borrowed the murky sound of witch house. The scene looks back to older, street-level dembow and to Ivy Queen, whose feminist lyrics and demands for sexual autonomy are treated as its precedent, and it gives a large place to queer and female artists who turn gender stereotypes about sexuality inside out. Del Real put it plainly: neoperreo turned perreo back into a social lubricant, something newer reggaeton had been losing. The internet did the distribution, with artists posting to SoundCloud before any producer called. Later the style met deconstructed club through Arca, whose albums Kick I and Kick II include "KLK" with Rosalía. By the early 2020s its influence had reached Rosalía's Motomami and artists such as Bad Gyal and La Zowi.
