Style recipe for Suno v5
Lo-fi hip-hop
Lo-fi hip-hop from the 2010s: dusty piano, boom bap drums, warm bass, nostalgic and warm in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Lo-fi hip hop, also called chillhop, came out of the underground beatmaking scene of the 2000s, helped along by the Roland SP-303 and SP-404 samplers, each of which put a lo-fi effect on its own button. Its sound is deliberately unpolished: downtempo, fuzzed-out beats, piano or guitar loops, fake vinyl hiss and samples from old video games, cartoons and self-help tapes. MF Doom and Madlib's Madvillainy (2004) is its shared touchstone, Nujabes, often called the godfather of the style, drove its growth with his music for the anime Samurai Champloo, and J Dilla is the other name tied to its roots. The genre found its real home on YouTube once 24-hour live streams took off in 2013, and the DJ Ryan Celsius traced their pull to nostalgia for the Toonami and Adult Swim bumpers of the 2000s. The channel ChilledCow, now Lofi Girl, fixed the image of a studious anime girl that the rest of the scene copied, and by 2018 Spotify's Chill Hits playlist had 5.4 million listeners. Streams doubled as chatrooms, audiences jumped during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and in 2025 Pitchfork reported that musicians in the genre were losing revenue as AI reshaped the music industry.
