History

Fandango is a lively Spanish couple dance in triple time, sung and danced to guitars, castanets, tambourine or handclaps. Its verses run four or five eight-syllable lines over the progression i-iv-V. The earliest known fandango melody sits in an anonymous guitar book from 1705, and the first description of the dance is in a 1712 letter by the Spanish priest Martín Martí. An old chronicle tells how the ecclesiastical authorities were about to ban it as a godless dance when one judge insisted it be seen first; two celebrated dancers performed it before the consistory, everyone joined in, and the ban was never heard of again. By the late 18th century European aristocrats loved it, and composers followed: Antonio Soler wrote a fandango for harpsichord, Gluck placed one in his ballet Don Juan (1761), Mozart in the third-act finale of The Marriage of Figaro (1786) and Rimsky-Korsakov in Capriccio Espagnol. Regional versions grew in Huelva and Málaga. The word travelled far: in Veracruz a fandango is a son jarocho party danced on a wooden platform, the Philippines made it the pandanggo, and the word itself came to mean a quarrel or a big fuss.
