Dungeon synth from the 2010s: lo-fi synth, harpsichord patch, choir pad, nostalgic and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Dungeon synth came out of the early Norwegian black metal scene in the early 1990s, built from black metal's imagery and dark ambient's sound. Its seed was the instrumental intro: keyboard pieces that opened or closed metal albums through the 1980s and 1990s, here stretched into whole releases with no tremolo picking, blast beats or shrieks at all. Electronic music had already crept into that scene, with Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze influencing Mayhem, Emperor and Enslaved; Mayhem's 1987 EP Deathcrush even opened with a Conrad Schnitzler piece. The two founders were Mortiis, the project of Emperor bassist Håvard Ellefsen, who also drew on Skinny Puppy and Enigma, and Burzum, Varg Vikernes' solo project, whose ambient side took from Dead Can Dance and Tchaikovsky. Mortiis' first demo, just under an hour long, was the first fully instrumental release in black metal dress, and its second version introduced the phrase dark dungeon music. The mood usually reaches for medieval Europe or fantasy. Comparisons with video game music are contested: Mortiis rejects them, while newer acts openly borrow from RPG soundtracks. Later offshoots include dino synth about dinosaurs, crypt hop mixed with lo-fi hip-hop, and German Tänzelcore with gabber kicks.
