History
Cyber metal is one of the places the industrial metal scene landed after its 1990s peak. The parent style formed in the late 1980s, when industrial music and heavy metal fused around two records: Godflesh's self-titled EP and Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey. Godflesh was founded by former Napalm Death guitarist Justin Broadrick, while Ministry came out of Wax Trax!, the independent industrial label, and Al Jourgensen rediscovered the guitar during a London session for that album after five years without touching one. KMFDM's Sascha Konietzko came in through a sampler, looping metal riffs because he hated that in metal the best ones were played only once. The sound runs on repeated riffs, samples, synthesizer or sequencer lines and distorted vocals. Nine Inch Nails took it to the mainstream with Broken and The Downward Spiral, and Ministry, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein and Rob Zombie shared that success through the 1990s. One path runs through coldwave, a 1990s offshoot of industrial metal whose lyrics were typically cyberpunk-oriented: when industrial music lost popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s, many coldwave artists moved on to cyber metal, synth-metal, nu metal and other styles.
