Chimurenga
Zimbabwean chimurenga from the 1980s: mbira thumb piano, hosho shakers, electric guitar, defiant and hypnotic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Chimurenga is Zimbabwean popular music coined and popularised by one man, the musician and political dissident Thomas Mapfumo. The word comes from Shona and entered everyday use during the Rhodesian Bush War of 1964-1979, and its meaning later widened to cover the fight for human rights and social justice. Mapfumo's idea was to take traditional Shona mbira music, built on the thumb piano with a wooden body and plucked metal tines, and play it with electric instruments, then load the songs with social and political commentary. The result builds its melodies on folk tunes, as mbira music does, but adds bass and electric guitars, hosho shakers and drums, under a fast, danceable beat. The vocals run emotional and can use call and response. Beyond Mapfumo the style is played by Jonas Sithole and Stella Chiweshe. Oliver Mtukudzi, counted as the country's second biggest name after Mapfumo, got a term of his own, Tuku Music, described as a blend of East African traditions with chimurenga and jit.
