Senegalese mbalax from the 1980s: sabar drum, tama drum, electric guitar, euphoric and defiant in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Mbalax is the urban dance music of Senegal, the Gambia and Mauritania, and its name gives away its engine: in the talk of Wolof percussionists, mbalax means accompaniment, the parts played on the mbeng-mbeng drum inside a sabar ensemble. The style took shape in Senegalese cities in the early 1970s, when a scene steeped in American soul and jazz, Cuban and Caribbean Latin music, Congolese rumba and French variety wanted a dance music of its own. Singers switched from French to Wolof, sabar rhythms moved onto electric bass, guitar and keyboards, and the nder lead drum, the sabar and the tama talking drum stayed at the front. Dancers tipped the singers as if they were griots. Etoile de Dakar with Youssou N'Dour and El Hadji Faye, Thione Seck's Raam Daan, Xalam II and Omar Pène's Super Diamono carried the new sound, and radio, cassettes and video clips took it to Mali, Ivory Coast and France. Its best-known collaboration is N'Dour's huge hit with Neneh Cherry, "Seven Seconds". Later mbalax absorbed R&B, hip-hop, zouk and coupé-décalé, and some dances are still named after the vocal mnemonics of the sabar rhythms beneath them.
