History
Balkan brass, popularly known by the Serbian name truba, trumpet, grew out of a fusion of military and folk music. Trumpeters served in the Serbian army of prince Stefan Vojislav at the Battle of Bar in 1042, but the living tradition starts with the First Serbian Uprising of 1804: trumpets woke soldiers and announced battles, and in the downtime soldiers used them to play folk songs. Back in their villages they kept playing, at births, weddings, slavas, harvests and funerals. In 1831 Prince Miloš formed the first official military band in Belgrade, and after the First World War the trumpet became the most popular folk instrument in Serbia, pushing aside the gaida and the violin. The sound comes from flugelhorns, trumpets, tubas, euphoniums and horns over snare and davul, playing fast, loud čoček and kolo. Romani musicians make up a large share of the players, and the best-known names include Boban Marković, Fanfare Ciocărlia and Goran Bregović. Emir Kusturica's films, Black Cat, White Cat among them, made the style popular outside the Balkans. The world's biggest brass band event is the Guča Trumpet Festival in Serbia, and the style echoes in pop songs such as Jason Derulo's Talk Dirty.
