History
The Boban Marković Orkestar play Serbian Romani brass music at full volume and full speed, with trumpets and flugelhorns trading dizzying runs over thumping tubas and a pounding bass drum. The band is led by trumpeter Boban Marković from Vladičin Han in southern Serbia, and it built its reputation at the Guča trumpet festival, the great annual gathering of Balkan brass, where from the late 1980s it collected first trumpet prizes and orchestra awards again and again. Its players also worked on the music for Emir Kusturica's Underground. Around 2000 the band broke through internationally, playing big European festivals and releasing records on Piranha Musik and later Asphalt Tango. Boban's son Marko joined as a teenager in 2002 and became the main soloist and arranger, pushing the sound toward funk and jazz accents, a change the album Go Marko Go! Brass Madness made explicit. On stage and on record the band stands out for blistering trumpet solos, Balkan dance rhythms such as the čoček and brass playing you feel in the chest as much as hear.
