You need far less music theory than the internet suggests, and the parts you need are not the parts that get taught first. Nobody producing music today is held back by not knowing the circle of fifths. Plenty are held back by not knowing why their arrangement feels flat in the second verse.
Here is the subset that actually changes what comes out of your speakers, ordered by how much it pays off.
1. Arrangement density, which pays off immediately
Not theory in the academic sense, and the single most valuable concept here.
Density means how much is playing at once. Almost every amateur track is too dense too early: full drums, bass, chords, lead and pads from bar one. The result is a track with nowhere to go, because everything already arrived.
The fix is subtraction across time. Start with two elements. Add one per section. Take something away before the chorus so the chorus can add it back.
This is why the loud-quiet dynamic in grunge works, why the drop in dance music works, and why a bridge that strips to voice and piano makes the final chorus feel enormous. The chorus is not louder in absolute terms; it is denser than what preceded it.

Structure is a separate lever from style and it is where most people never look.
2. Frequency ranges, which fix your mix
Four bands, and knowing them solves most mixing problems.
Below 100 Hz: bass and kick. Almost nothing else needs to be here, and filtering everything else out clears space you did not know you had.
200 to 500 Hz: body, warmth, and where mud accumulates when several instruments contribute at once.
2 to 5 kHz: presence and intelligibility, and where harshness lives. Voice sits here, which is why guitars and pads compete with it.
Above 8 kHz: air and sparkle. Pleasant, and what makes a track fatiguing when overdone.

3. Tension and release, which is what a song is
Music works by setting up expectations and then satisfying or delaying them. Every technique you will learn is a way of doing that.
The practical version: something has to be unresolved for something to feel resolved. A chorus lands because the verse left something open. A drop hits because the build withheld it. A final chorus feels earned because the bridge took something away.
If a track feels flat, it usually has no tension anywhere, not too little payoff.
4. Sections and their jobs
Verse carries information, chorus carries the point, bridge provides contrast, and the outro decides how you leave.
The most common structural failure is a chorus that is just another verse with more instruments. A chorus needs fewer syllables, a simpler rhythm and one repeated idea. Writing a chorus that lands is the highest-leverage songwriting skill there is, and it is more useful than any amount of harmony study.
5. Tempo, roughly
You need genre ranges, not precision. Ballads 60 to 90, pop 100 to 120, house 118 to 128, drum and bass around 174. Knowing where your genre lives stops you asking for a tempo that fights the style.

6. Keys and chords, which matter less than you think
Here is the mildly heretical part.
You need to know that major sounds brighter and minor darker, that two tracks in clashing keys cannot be layered, and that transposing changes singability. That is genuinely most of it for a producer.
You do not need to read notation, name every mode, or understand secondary dominants to make good music. Millions of records were made by people who could not.

What to learn if you want to go deeper

- Ear training, specifically identifying intervals and hearing whether something is major or minor. More valuable than any written theory.

- Modes, but only after you have used the common progressions enough to be bored by them.
- Voice leading, which is what makes chord changes sound smooth rather than blocky.

The producer's actual bottleneck
It is rarely theory. It is vocabulary: being able to name the sound in your head precisely enough to reproduce it.
That is why "I can hear it but I cannot describe it" is the sentence that stops most people, and why the fix is listening analytically rather than studying harmony. Take a track you love, listen three times, and name the instruments, the decade and the vocal treatment. Do that ten times and you have a working vocabulary.
