How to make a beat: four elements and four patterns

A beat is four things: a kick, a snare, a hi-hat pattern, and a bassline that agrees with the kick. Everything else is decoration. Get those four right and the beat works; get them wrong and no amount of layering rescues it.

Here is how each one behaves, the pattern grid that explains most genres, and how to brief a beat when you are generating rather than programming.

The grid, which explains almost everything

Most popular music sits in four beats to a bar, counted one two three four. Divide each beat in half and you have eighths, in quarters and you have sixteenths. That grid is where every drum pattern lives.

The kick marks the pulse. Where you place it decides the genre more than any other single choice.

The snare answers the kick, almost always on beats two and four in Western popular music. Move it and the whole feel changes.

The hi-hat fills the space between and sets the perceived speed. Eighth notes feel steady, sixteenths feel busy, and irregular patterns feel modern.

The bass locks to the kick. When the bass and kick disagree rhythmically, the low end sounds muddy no matter how you mix it, which is the most common reason a beat feels weak rather than wrong.

Four patterns that cover most genres

Four-on-the-floor. Kick on every beat: one two three four. House, techno, disco, dance-pop. Relentless and hypnotic, which is why it dominates music made for dancing.

Boom bap. Kick on one and the and-of-two, snare on two and four. Classic hip-hop. The slight looseness between them is the entire character.

Trap. Kick sparse and syncopated, snare or clap on three rather than two and four, hi-hats subdividing rapidly with rolls. This is why trap at 140 BPM feels like 70, which is the half-time confusion that makes tempo ambiguous.

Backbeat rock. Kick on one and three, snare on two and four, straight eighths on the hats. The default of most rock and pop for seventy years.

Learn to hear these four and you can identify the skeleton of most tracks within a few bars.

Making a beat sound human

Programmed drums sound mechanical for two specific reasons, and both are fixable.

Everything is exactly on the grid. Real drummers land microseconds early or late, and consistently so: many push the hi-hat slightly ahead and lay the snare slightly back. Nudging elements a few milliseconds off the grid is what "groove" or "swing" settings do.

Every hit is the same volume. A real kit varies constantly. Ghost notes on the snare, softer hats between accents, a slightly harder kick on the downbeat. Velocity variation does more for realism than any sample choice.

The counterintuitive part: some genres want the machine. House and techno are built on rigid grids, and humanising them makes them worse. Match the treatment to the genre rather than applying it universally.

Briefing a beat instead of programming it

If you are generating, the same knowledge applies, expressed as description rather than as a grid.

Name the pattern, not the tempo alone:

For a trap variant, change the pattern words and nothing else:

Where beats go wrong

Too many elements. A beat is meant to leave room. If you are adding a fourth percussion layer, the problem is usually that the first three are not interesting enough.

Kick and bass fighting. The single most common low-end problem. They need to agree rhythmically before any mixing helps, and muddiness has a specific frequency address.

No variation across the track. Eight bars looped for three minutes is a loop, not an arrangement. Drop the hats for a section, add a fill before the chorus, take the kick out for two bars.

Borrowing a tempo from the wrong genre. 170 BPM belongs to drum and bass and thrash. Putting a boom bap pattern there produces something confused.

Sampling without clearance. Chopping a record you do not own is a rights problem regardless of how transformed it sounds, and separation tools do not change that.

A practical first beat

  1. Pick a genre and its tempo band. Do not fight the pairing.
  2. Program or brief the kick and snare only. Listen. If the skeleton is not good, nothing added will fix it.
  3. Add hats and adjust the perceived speed with the subdivision rather than the tempo.
  4. Write a bassline that lands where the kick lands. Agreement first, melody second.
  5. Add one melodic element, not three.
  6. Arrange it: take something away for eight bars, put it back.
  7. Check the low end on a phone speaker, where you will hear whether the bass survives without subwoofer support.
