Reading the numbers, in ninety seconds

Progressions get written in Roman numerals because that makes them portable between keys. Uppercase means major, lowercase means minor.

Six progressions that do most of the work

I-V-vi-IV. The one. Resolved, uplifting, endlessly reusable. C-G-Am-F. If you want something that sounds immediately familiar and singable, start here.

vi-IV-I-V. The same four chords starting on the minor. Am-F-C-G. Melancholy at the start, lifting at the end, which is why it dominates pop that wants to feel bittersweet rather than happy.

I-vi-IV-V. The fifties progression. C-Am-F-G. Doo-wop, early rock, ballads. It sounds like an older recording before a single instrument is chosen.

ii-V-I. The jazz cadence. Dm-G-C. The strongest sense of arrival in Western harmony, and the reason jazz standards feel like they land.

i-VII-VI-VII. Minor and modal. Am-G-F-G. Rock, folk and anything wanting motion without resolution.

I-IV-V. Blues, and the foundation under most rock. C-F-G. Three chords, and it has been enough for seventy years.

Two rules make these usable rather than academic. First, the same progression at different tempos and with different instrumentation sounds like completely different music, which is why reuse is not plagiarism. Second, where you place the chord changes against the bar matters as much as which chords they are.

Where generators help, and where they do not

They help with: unfamiliar territory. If you always write in the same three progressions, a generator suggesting modal interchange or a borrowed chord gets you out of the rut.

They help with: voicings and inversions, which are harder to think of than progressions.

They do not help with: the thing that makes a progression yours, which is rhythm, placement and what the melody does over it. A generator gives you Am-F-C-G, and so does every other generator, because that is what the corpus contains.

The part specific to AI music, and it is counterintuitive

If you are generating a track rather than playing one, do not put a chord progression in the style prompt.

It behaves like a key or a bare tempo number: a weak signal the model rounds off, competing with the instructions that actually work. What to write instead, to get the effect a progression would have given you:

  • for the I-V-vi-IV feeling: uplifting, anthemic, resolved
  • for vi-IV-I-V: bittersweet, melancholic verse, lifting chorus
  • for the fifties progression: 1950s doo-wop, which carries the harmony inside the genre token
  • for ii-V-I: jazzy, smooth resolution, plus jazz instrumentation
  • for modal minor: brooding, unresolved, hypnotic

The genre token is doing the harmonic work. Ask for 1950s doo-wop and you get that progression without naming it, because the progression is part of what the genre means. Making a familiar progression sound like yours

Since the progressions are shared property, differentiation happens elsewhere. Four levers, in order of effect:

Rhythm of the changes. Two bars per chord feels stately; changing on the third beat feels urgent. Same four chords, different song.

Bass movement. Playing an inversion so the bass walks stepwise instead of jumping transforms the feeling completely.

What the melody avoids. A melody that lands on the root of every chord sounds like an exercise. One that lands on the third or the ninth sounds like music.

Instrumentation and era. This is the biggest lever of all and the one that transfers directly into a generated brief, which is why the recipes are built from it.
