History
Wegz built Egyptian trap into mainstream pop without dropping its street accent. He comes from the working-class Wardian district of Alexandria and started releasing tracks in 2017, with songs such as "TNT" marking him early as one of the first Egyptian rappers to fully commit to trap. "Bazeet" went viral in 2019, and "Dorak Gai" in 2020 made him a household name, gathering tens of millions of views within weeks. "El Bakht" in 2022 became the most streamed Arab song of the year, and he spent several years as the most streamed artist in Egypt on Spotify. His sound mixes Western trap drums with mahraganat, shaabi, R&B and Afrobeat touches, and he names influences as far apart as Ahmed Adaweyah and Future. His lyrics use thick Egyptian slang and speak from ordinary neighbourhood life. A listener recognises him by the husky, sing-rap delivery, catchy melodic hooks and beats that swing between hard trap and something close to a street wedding.
