History

Tyla sings pop over amapiano, and the combination is what made her travel. She came up in Johannesburg, where the genre's log drum bassline and shuffling percussion had already reshaped South African dance music, and her contribution was to put a light, close, conversational R&B vocal on top of it instead of the chants and DJ edits the style usually carried. Water in 2023 did the work: a slow rolling groove, a hook built for a dance clip, and a vocal that never pushes. It won the first Grammy awarded for Best African Music Performance. Truth or Dare and Push 2 Start keep the same balance, with the percussion left dry and roomy and the voice mixed forward. What a listener recognises is the space in her records, the low woody thump of the log drum against sharp shakers, and a singer who stays soft in the middle of it rather than competing with the rhythm. She is the point where amapiano stopped being a regional dance sound and became international pop.
