History
Master KG makes South African dance music with a light touch: mid-tempo four-to-the-floor drums, a simple keyboard riff repeated until it becomes a hook, and a guest vocal carrying most of the melody. He grew up in Limpopo, where a regional strain of house built on gentle, rolling grooves rather than hard club pressure gave him his template, and he began producing in his teens. Skeleton Move established the pattern, a dance track with almost nothing in it that still fills a floor. Jerusalema went much further. Built on a piano loop, a steady kick and a guest vocal sung in Zulu as something close to a hymn, it spread first through southern Africa and then worldwide during the lockdowns of 2020, largely because of a line dance filmed and copied by groups of colleagues, nurses, soldiers and families on every continent. The appeal was the restraint: the track never drops or escalates, it simply keeps going and lets the voice carry it.
