History
DJ Maphorisa is one of the producers who turned amapiano from a South African township sound into an export. The style he works in runs slower than house, somewhere near a walking tempo, and is carried by the log drum, a deep sliding bass tone that functions as both the low end and the lead hook. Around it sit jazzy electric piano chords, shakers and percussion loops with a lot of air between them, and vocals that drift in and out rather than sitting on top. His partnership with Kabza De Small as the Scorpion Kings produced much of the catalogue that took the genre out of Gauteng and onto dancefloors across Africa, Europe and the UK. Before that he had already worked across South African pop and Afro house, which is part of why the amapiano he makes is arranged like pop rather than like a DJ tool. Banyana and Izolo show the two modes, one built on a vocal hook, the other on the drum pattern itself.
