History

Sleeper wrote sharp, wry guitar pop about ordinary lives, and they were fronted by singer and songwriter Louise Wener, whose lyrics were observational and often funny. The London band emerged in the middle of Britpop and were quickly tied to it, although the music was simpler than much of the scene: bright, chiming guitars, tight choruses and a clear, conversational vocal. Their debut Smart came out in 1995 with "Inbetweener", a song about a dull, safe relationship that became their signature. The It Girl in 1996 was their commercial peak and carried "What Do I Do Now?", "Sale of the Century" and "Nice Guy Eddie". They also recorded a cover of Blondie's "Atomic" for the Trainspotting soundtrack. After a third album in 1997 the band split, and Wener went on to write novels. Sleeper reformed in 2017 and returned with new material two years later. Listeners recognise them by the combination of catchy, uncomplicated arrangements and lyrics that notice small social details other Britpop bands skipped over.
