History

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings played soul and funk as if the 1960s had never ended: horns recorded live, dry and close drums, and a band that treated James Brown and the Stax records as a working method rather than a reference. They were the flagship act of Daptone Records in Brooklyn, the label founded by bassist Gabriel Roth and saxophonist Neal Sugarman, and their debut, "Dap-Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings", came out in 2002. Jones had sung in church and wedding bands for years and worked jobs including corrections officer at Rikers Island, and she was already in her forties when the records gave her a career. "100 Days, 100 Nights" in 2007 and "I Learned the Hard Way" in 2010 widened the audience, and the Dap-Kings also became known as the band behind Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black". Jones kept performing through treatment for pancreatic cancer, a period filmed in the documentary "Miss Sharon Jones!", and died in 2016. Onstage she was a whirl of dancing and shouting; on record the group is known for a warm, tape-saturated sound.
