History

Rare Earth played long, driving soul rock that turned Motown songs into extended jams with fuzzed guitar, organ and loud drums. The Detroit band was one of the few white acts on Motown, and the company even named a new label, Rare Earth Records, after them. Their breakthrough came from reworking a Temptations song: the album Get Ready (1969) was built around a version of "Get Ready" that ran for about twenty minutes and took up a whole side, with a shorter edit becoming a big hit single. Ecology (1970) followed the same path with "(I Know) I'm Losing You", another Temptations song stretched into a rock workout. One World (1971) gave them "I Just Want to Celebrate", an original that became their best-known song and still turns up in films and ads. Drummer Peter Rivera often sang lead, giving the band a soulful voice behind the kit. Listeners recognise Rare Earth by the mix of Motown melody and hard rock volume, the congas and horns, and the way a three-minute song could turn into a long live groove.
