History
Mylon LeFevre brought Southern gospel blood into long-haired, bluesy rock and roll at the start of the seventies. He grew up singing and playing guitar with the LeFevres, one of the pioneering family groups of Southern gospel, and at seventeen wrote Without Him, a song Elvis Presley recorded for How Great Thou Art and that more than a hundred artists went on to cover. Instead of staying on the quartet circuit, he moved toward the rock world. His 1970 album Mylon (We Believe) mixed gospel choirs, Southern soul and loud guitars and is regarded by some as the first true Jesus rock record; Holy Smoke and Over the Influence followed in the same rough, swampy vein. Through the seventies he played and recorded alongside major rock names, including Eric Clapton and Elton John, while his life drifted a long way from the church he came from. After a renewed conversion he formed the band Broken Heart in 1982 and won a Grammy with them in 1988. He is heard at his best in that early mix of revival fervour and Southern rock grit.
