History

PNL are two brothers from the Tarterets estate in Corbeil-Essonnes, south of Paris, and they rewrote what French rap could sound like by slowing it down and drowning it in reverb. The beats are wide and hazy, closer to cloud rap than to the boom bap that preceded them, and both voices sit inside heavy auto-tune used as colour rather than as correction. They give no interviews, appear on no one else's records and release everything themselves, which turned the absence into part of the appeal. Deux freres made the family bond the whole subject, money and loyalty and the estate, sung more often than rapped. Au DD was filmed on the Eiffel Tower, the brothers hanging off the structure above Paris, and the video passed a hundred million views within weeks. Blanka shows the other side, slow and melancholy, the hook floating over the bass. Listeners recognise the blur: melody, slang and echo all arriving at once.
