History
Olamide rapped in Yoruba when the Nigerian mainstream still assumed a hit had to be in English, and he did it from Bariga, a working class part of Lagos whose slang he put on record without translating. The delivery is conversational and fast, riding the percussion rather than fighting it, and the hooks are chanted rather than sung, which is why so many of them turned into street catchphrases. Wo and Science Student both did that, a dance and a warning arriving in the same package. Infinity showed the other side, melodic and relaxed, closer to the afrobeats the rest of the world was starting to hear. He put out albums at a pace almost nobody kept up with, and he built the label YBNL into the place young Lagos artists went to be heard first. Later successes by singers he signed carry his fingerprints, particularly the habit of keeping a hook plain and letting the drums do the persuading. On stage he works as a crowd leader more than as a soloist with a set.
