History
Magic System came out of Abidjan playing zouglou, the Ivorian style built on interlocking call-and-response vocals, a light dance rhythm and lyrics that treat hardship through humour rather than complaint. Premier Gaou is the song that carried the group far beyond that context, a story about being played for a fool by a girlfriend who comes back once the money arrives, sung over a loping guitar figure and a chorus a whole room can hold. It spread across West Africa first, then became a large and long-running hit in France, where it settled in as a party standard for years. The records that followed, Bouger Bouger among them, leaned further towards pan-African dance pop and European club production while keeping the group vocal at the centre. What a listener recognises is that vocal arrangement, several voices trading a single line, the bright guitar that never leaves its upper register, and a tempo built for a crowd on its feet.
