History

INXS worked the seam between new wave and funk: clipped guitar stabs, a rhythm section playing for the dancefloor rather than the stadium, and Michael Hutchence singing low and close to the microphone. The band formed in Sydney and spent years in Australian pubs before the international records, and that apprenticeship is audible in how tightly the six players lock together. Kick, released in 1987, is where the approach paid off. Need You Tonight is built out of almost nothing, one guitar riff, a hip shuffle and a half-whispered vocal, and it works because every part leaves room for the others. New Sensation adds horns and a saxophone break without losing that economy. Never Tear Us Apart goes the other way, slow strings and a stately organ, and it is the song proving Hutchence could hold a ballad as convincingly as a strut. His death in 1997 ended the band's first life. What listeners recognise is swagger without volume: funk timing played by a rock band that never needs to shout to land it.
