History
Fallujah made technical death metal float. The band formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 2000s and started out close to deathcore, but over the following decade they moved toward a sound where blast beats and dense, precise riffing sit under soaring, heavily processed lead guitar, synthesizer pads and wide reverb. The Flesh Prevails in 2014 is the record that defined that approach: brutal in the rhythm section, almost dreamlike on top, with guitar lines that behave more like ambient melodies than shred showcases. Dreamless followed in 2016 and leaned further into atmosphere, bringing in guest clean female vocals and electronic textures, while Undying Light in 2019 tried a more direct, song-focused shape with a different vocal approach. The band has gone through several lineup changes, but the core identity has held. A listener recognises Fallujah by the contrast between guttural vocals and crushing drums below and the long, sustained, shimmering leads above, a combination that made them a reference point for the atmospheric branch of modern technical death metal.
