History

Darkspace play black metal as a cosmic void: long, droning pieces where tremolo guitars, distant shrieks and cold synthesizers blur into a single roaring mass, closer to the sound of empty space than to riffs and songs. The band comes from Bern, Switzerland, and was formed in 1999; it is often named as a pioneer of the space-themed branch of ambient black metal. Its core figure is Wroth, Tobias Möckl, who also records alone as Paysage d'Hiver, alongside guitarist Zhaaral and a bass player. The group keeps its identity deliberately impersonal. Every album is titled Dark Space followed by a Roman numeral or tally mark, and the tracks are simply numbered, so the records read as parts of one continuous work. Lyrics deal with space, darkness and cosmic mysticism, and the music is threaded with dialogue samples from films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Event Horizon. Concerts are rare, which adds to the mystique. Darkspace give themselves away through drum-machine blasts buried deep in the mix, layered synth drones and pieces that unfold over a quarter of an hour or more.
