History

Blut aus Nord took black metal apart and rebuilt it as something closer to industrial and ambient music: warped, dissonant guitars, mechanical drumming, murky layers of reverb and chords that seem to bend out of tune on purpose. The French project, centred on the musician known as Vindsval, started in the 1990s with a more conventional, atmospheric style, and then changed direction sharply with The Work Which Transforms God (2003), a record that swapped tremolo melodies for disorienting texture and became a reference for experimental black metal. MoRT (2006) went further into abstraction, so formless and oppressive that many listeners heard it as noise. The 777 trilogy, beginning with 777 Sect(s) in 2011, brought back rhythm and repetition, with grinding, almost industrial loops. Alongside this experimental line the band has also kept a more melodic, epic series called Memoria Vetusta. With Deathspell Omega, Blut aus Nord made France a centre of avant-garde black metal. A listener recognises them by the sense of a machine slowly going wrong beneath the guitars.
