History

Corrupted play doom so slow and heavy that single chords seem to hang in the air for whole bars, and they surround that weight with long stretches of quiet acoustic guitar, drone and near silence. The band formed in Osaka in 1994 and has kept itself deliberately out of view: no interviews, no press photos, and the only pictures of the members are ones fans took at shows. Another thing sets them apart from almost every Japanese heavy band: the lyrics are written almost entirely in Spanish, with occasional passages in Japanese, English or German. Early records such as Paso Inferior (1997) and Llenándose de Gusanos (1999) stretched songs far past normal length, and El Mundo Frio (2005) went further as one continuous piece of more than an hour, drifting from sparse, melancholy playing into crushing downtuned passages and back. Corrupted belong to the extreme end of sludge and funeral doom, and they turn up on splits with American bands of the same slow, misanthropic school. What marks them out is patience, the guttural voice and the sheer scale of each piece.
