History

Bjork writes pop as if the rules were optional, pairing a voice that moves from a whisper to a full-throated cry with arrangements that put string sections and hard electronic percussion in the same bar. She came out of Iceland and the band the Sugarcubes before her solo records of the 1990s, where house producers, jazz players and orchestral writing were treated as one palette rather than separate worlds. Post and Homogenic are the albums most often cited: the first restless and genre-hopping, from the brass-driven swing of It's Oh So Quiet to the broken beats of Army of Me, the second colder and more unified, built on volcanic bass and strings that sound carved rather than played. Hyperballad shows the method plainly, a quiet domestic image sung over a beat that keeps accelerating under it. She also worked in film, taking the lead in Dancer in the Dark and the acting prize at Cannes in 2000. What identifies her is phrasing: vowels stretched and bitten off in places no other singer would choose.
