History

Kate Bush arrived sounding like nobody else: a high, elastic voice that could leap an octave inside a phrase, piano parts staged more like theatre than pop, and lyrics written from inside other people's heads. "Wuthering Heights" gave Bronte's Cathy her own voice at the window and went to number one in Britain in 1978, written by a teenager who argued the label out of its preferred single. The records that followed moved away from conventional song craft toward sound design: the Fairlight sampler, stacked vocal treatments, rhythms closer to folk drumming than to rock. Hounds of Love gathered the best of it. "Running Up That Hill" rides one pulsing keyboard figure and a drum sound with no air in it, while "Cloudbusting" is built on stabbing strings and a lyric taken from a son's memoir of his father. She stopped touring at the end of the 1970s and stayed off the stage for decades, which deepened the mythology around her. Listeners know her by the voice, close and unafraid of drama, and by arrangements that refuse to settle where a pop song usually would.
