History
Marina and the Diamonds was the stage name of Marina Lambrini Diamandis, a Welsh singer-songwriter born 10 October 1985 in Abergavenny, Wales, to a Welsh mother and Greek father. Despite the band-sounding name, she performed solo — "the Diamonds" referred to her fanbase, not backing musicians. After self-releasing the EP "Mermaid vs. Sailor" in 2007 and placing runner-up on BBC's Sound of 2010 poll, she signed to Atlantic Records. Her debut album, The Family Jewels (2010), blended indie pop and new wave, reached number five on the UK Albums Chart, went gold, and spawned the UK top-20 single "Hollywood." Her 2012 follow-up, Electra Heart, a concept album built around an alter-ego character, gave her her only UK number-one album, led by the top-20 single "Primadonna." She won Best UK & Ireland Act at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards. She later dropped the "and the Diamonds" moniker to record as MARINA, releasing Froot (2015), Love + Fear (2019), and Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land (2021).
