History

Author & Punisher is the one-man project of Tristan Shone, a San Diego mechanical engineer who decided that ordinary instruments could not make the sound he heard in his head, so he built his own. His hand-machined controllers, which he calls Drone Machines and Dub Machines, are pushed, pulled and twisted on stage to trigger crushing low end, slow mechanical rhythms and a voice run through heavy processing. The result sits between doom metal and industrial music: riffs as slow and heavy as sludge, but played by machinery rather than guitars. Shone has run the project since 2004. Women & Children came out on Seventh Rule Recordings, and Relapse Records then released Beastland in 2018 and Krüller in 2022. Krüller opened the sound up with guest musicians and more melody, while keeping the grinding weight. A listener recognises Author & Punisher by the feel of hydraulics and steel: bass that seems to press on the chest, pounding tempos, and a lone performer hunched over custom metal gear.
