History
YOB play doom that reaches for the cosmic: vast, slow riffs that suddenly lurch into heavy, driving grooves, and Mike Scheidt's extraordinary voice, which moves from a high, keening wail to a deep roar within a single song. The band comes from Eugene, Oregon, and was formed by Scheidt in the mid-nineties. From the beginning their lyrics drew on Buddhist and Taoist ideas, turning long songs into meditations on consciousness, suffering and release. After a break in the second half of the 2000s the band returned with The Great Cessation in 2009, a raw and punishing record. Clearing the Path to Ascend in 2014 is often named their high point, closing with the long, aching "Marrow", where the heaviness gives way to something close to grace. Our Raw Heart followed in 2018, written after Scheidt survived a serious illness, and it carries both gratitude and pain. YOB sit where doom meets psychedelia and spiritual searching, and their influence runs through much of the modern heavy underground. Listeners recognise them by that soaring voice and riffs that feel like they are climbing somewhere.
