History
Ali Sethi trained in the Hindustani classical tradition and sings ghazal with that schooling audible in every ornament, then places it over production that belongs to the present. It is why his reading of "Ranjish Hi Sahi" works as a study of a standard rather than a cover of one: the melodic turns are exact, the tone is unforced, and the long vowels are left exposed. He grew up in Lahore and came to performance after writing fiction, which shows in the way he treats a lyric as text to be read aloud as much as sung. "Pasoori", recorded for Coke Studio Pakistan with Shae Gill, built a loop of Turkish and Punjabi rhythmic material under a melody that behaves like a raga, and became the first track from that programme to cross into the global streaming charts. "Chandni Raat" holds the classical side undiluted. What identifies him is the diction: Urdu and Punjabi sung slowly enough for the words to keep their weight.
