History
Jumpstyle came out of Belgium in the late 1990s, where Da Boy Tommy helped put the word into circulation, and grew up inside the European hard dance scene. It draws on tech-trance, hardstyle, gabber and makina: a 909 kick in four-on-the-floor, and from around 2002-2003 the pitched basslines, multiband distortion and square-wave synths of hardstyle. It is not simply slowed-down gabber. The music is inseparable from its dance, jumpen, a word built from the English jump and the Dutch and German infinitive ending -en: a stiff upper body, fast kicks, jumps and spinning footwork, danced solo or in sync as a duojump. The commercial peak ran from 2006 to 2008, with Jeckyll & Hyde's “Frozen Flame”, Patrick Jumpen's “The Secret” and Scooter, whose 2007 album Jumping All Over the World went to number one in the UK. By the early 2010s the charts had moved on, but online contests kept the dance going; the Russian site jumpstylers.ru ran leagues where dancers from around the world competed. Major Lazer folded it into “Original Don”, and in the early 2020s Lithuanian rapper Yabujin, recording as DJ Gyrotta Zao, sparked a TikTok revival nicknamed Yabujin-core.
