History

Hardstyle grew out of the hard dance scenes of the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy, drawing on techno, new beat and hardcore, and above all on hard trance, whose reverse bass, a distorted offbeat kick-bass, became its first signature. Early tracks ran at roughly 140 to 150 BPM with overdriven kicks, vocal samples and dissonant synths known as screeches; modern hardstyle sits nearer 150. The genre's defining trick came later: because a hardstyle kick sustains, producers learned to shape it with distortion, EQ and layering until the kick itself plays the bassline, a technique called pitching. The scene grew around events as much as records. Q-dance staged Qlubtempo in Zaandam in 2000, often credited as the first hardstyle event, then launched Qlimax, and on 4 July 2002 the company registered the word hardstyle as a trademark. Around 2002 the two largest Dutch labels were Fusion Records, home to DJ Zany, and Scantraxx, founded by Dov Elkabas. Defqon.1, running since 2003 in Biddinghuizen, remains the biggest gathering, while Qlimax ended in 2024. From about 2010 the music split into melodic euphoric hardstyle and darker rawstyle, and its production habits spread into big room house, frenchcore and happy hardcore.
