History

Halfstep is a branch of drum and bass that changes one thing and lets everything else follow. The kick pattern can stay close to other drum and bass, but the snare moves: where a two-step beat hits it twice per bar, halfstep hits it once, right in the middle of the bar. The tempo stays the same, yet the track feels as if it has slowed down. Some tracks drop the snare altogether and let the kick and intricate percussion carry the rhythm. The idea goes back to the 1990s, when it existed only as scattered experiments by a few drum and bass producers rather than a genre of its own. Things probably shifted in 2000 with Deadline, a track by Digital, a British producer who was already well respected by then. People began to talk about halfstep as a subgenre once Amit arrived: from 2002 he pushed the sound, brought it to labels such as Metalheadz and Commercial Suicide, and added exotic, ethnic colours of his own. Breakage picked up the baton next, followed by established names and newcomers alike. Among the artists who have turned to the sound are Response, Red Army, Homemade Weapons, Ruffhouse and Acid Lab.
