Extempo Calypso

playfulswaggeringwarm90–115 BPM

Extempo calypso from the 1970s: acoustic guitar, shaker, hand drums, playful and swaggering in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Extempo is calypso made up on the spot. Performers take turns improvising, in song or rhythmic speech, on a theme handed to them in front of an audience, and success is judged by wit and ingenuity. It is practised above all in Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada, and its shape echoes traditional African song: a soloist carries the melody while a chorus answers with a refrain. Verses come as a single tone of four lines or a double tone of eight, sung over one of four stock melodies, "Sans Humanite", "Matilda", "Miss Mary Ann" and "Big Bamboo", with "Sans Humanite" the most widely used. Topics come from current events, handled with mockery and sarcasm or with flattery and praise. The contest peaks every year at the Trinidad Carnival, where singers compete for the title of National Extempo Monarch, and in extempo war, also called calypso war, rivals attack each other's efforts inside their own verses. The acknowledged Grandmaster of Extempo was Lord Pretender, twice honoured by the government of Trinidad and Tobago for his services to calypso; other notable names include Brother Resistance, Black Sage, The Relator and Lady Africa. It is often compared with the Dozens and freestyle rap.
