History
Egg punk is an internet-era microgenre of punk that took shape in the American Midwest in the early 2010s, first under the name Devo-core. Its name comes from 2017 memes that laid out a spectrum between egg punk and chain punk: chain punk for the traditional, aggressive bands that took themselves very seriously, egg punk for the experimental and satirical ones. The records sound cheap on purpose: fast songs, jittery guitars, cheapo keyboards, lo-fi recording and mixing, hand-drawn or collage covers, with Devo as the model for both sound and look. The central bands were the Coneheads from Indiana, founded in 2013 and led by Mark Winter, and Lumpy and the Dumpers from St. Louis, whose frontman Martin Meyer put out similar cassettes on Lumpy Records. Uranium Club in Minneapolis and Warm Bodies in Kansas City took the same approach. A single YouTube user known only as Jimmy did much for the scene's visibility by uploading rips of the tapes. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic pushed musicians toward cheap home recording, and the style spread beyond the Midwest, most notably to Australia with Ausmuteants, Gee Tee and Tee Vee Repairmann, and Snõõper and Prison Affair are also filed under the name.
