History
Cambodian rock took shape in Phnom Penh after the country won independence from France in 1953, under King Norodom Sihanouk, himself a songwriter who encouraged homegrown pop. Students brought French records home, Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan especially, Latin cha cha cha and à gogo records arrived too, and singers fused it all with traditional Cambodian forms. In 1959 the teenage brothers Mol Kagnol and Mol Kamach formed Baksey Cham Krong, widely seen as the country's first rock band, and likened themselves to Cliff Richard and The Shadows. By the mid-1960s Sinn Sisamouth was drawing psychedelic and garage rock into his songs, while US armed forces radio aimed at troops in the Vietnam War fed the scene rock and soul. Ros Serey Sothea, honoured by Sihanouk as the "Queen with the Golden Voice", used the Cambodian "ghost voice" of quick octave jumps that has been compared to yodelling, and Pen Ran sang risqué lyrics that subverted Khmer gender roles. After 1970 Yol Aularong's sarcastic garage rock earned him the label proto-punk. The Khmer Rouge crushed the scene in 1975, and many of its musicians disappeared or were executed. Compilations released internationally from the late 1990s gave the music a second life.
