History

Before the name, they were the Drifters, the band standing behind Cliff Richard, and they changed it in 1959 to stop being confused with the American group. Hank Marvin played lead on a Fiesta Red Fender Stratocaster, one of the first to reach Britain, through a Vox amplifier and a tape echo unit. Clean tone, deep vibrato arm and a long repeat added up to a sound every English teenager with a guitar tried to copy. Bruce Welch handled rhythm, Jet Harris played bass, Tony Meehan drummed. Apache, written by Jerry Lordan, topped the UK chart in 1960 and held the position for five weeks. F.B.I., Kon-Tiki, Wonderful Land and Dance On followed, all instrumentals, each built on one singing melody line rather than a riff. They kept backing Richard through the decade while recording on their own, which is why the discography runs in two parallel columns for most of the 1960s.
