History
The Beach Boys formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961, built around brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Signing with Capitol Records, the group launched a five-year run of 16 consecutive US top 40 hits starting with "Surfin' Safari" (1962), pioneering the "California sound" - close vocal harmonies over lyrics about surfing, cars, and romance, rooted in 1950s rock and roll, R&B, and pop vocal groups. Under Brian Wilson's increasingly ambitious songwriting and production, the band moved toward a denser, orchestral studio sound, culminating in the 1966 album Pet Sounds and the single "Good Vibrations," both now ranked among the most influential recordings in popular music. The band has placed 37 songs in the US Billboard Hot 100 top 40, more than any other American band, with four reaching number one, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them 12th on its list of the greatest artists of all time, the highest placement of any American band. Dennis Wilson died in 1983, Carl Wilson in 1998, and Brian Wilson in 2025.
