History

toe play instrumental rock built on clean, interlocking guitar lines, rolling bass and unusually expressive drumming, a sound that sits between math rock and post-rock but feels warmer and more intimate than either. The band formed in Tokyo around the start of the 2000s and became a reference point for the style, both in Japan and for guitar-based instrumental bands abroad. Their debut full-length, The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety, released in 2005, set out the approach: melodic guitar figures layered over shifting rhythms, with passages that build patiently rather than explode. For Long Tomorrow in 2009 brought in guest vocals, acoustic guitar and keys, giving the music a softer, song-like side, and Hear You in 2015 continued that gentle, more open direction. The band releases its music on its own label and is known for energetic live shows. Listeners recognise toe by the drummer's busy, dynamic playing at the centre of the mix, tapped and arpeggiated guitars, and a mood that stays hopeful even at its most complex.
