History
Shirley Bassey was born on 8 January 1937 in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales, and grew up in the nearby Splott neighborhood. A powerhouse vocalist with a sultry, theatrical delivery, she became one of the first Black British entertainers to reach international stardom and a forerunner of the pop divas who followed decades later. Her breakthrough came in 1957 with "The Banana Boat Song," but she is best known for James Bond film themes: "Goldfinger" (1964), "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), and "Moonraker" (1979), making her the only singer to have performed three official Bond themes. "Goldfinger" gave her her sole US Top 40 hit, reaching No. 8 in 1965. She won the BRIT Award for Best Female Solo Artist in 1977, was made a CBE in 1993 and a Dame in 2000, and has sold an estimated 135 million records. In 2013 she performed "Goldfinger" live at the Academy Awards to mark the Bond franchise's 50th anniversary.
