History
Sammy Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925 - May 16, 1990) was born in Harlem, New York, and began performing at age three in vaudeville with his father and the Will Mastin Trio. A 1951 breakout show at Ciro's in West Hollywood launched him as a solo star, and his 1955 debut album, Starring Sammy Davis Jr., established him in pop, jazz-inflected standards, and Las Vegas showroom entertainment. He became a core member of the Rat Pack alongside Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, appearing with them in films such as Ocean's 11. His biggest hit, "The Candy Man" (1972), the theme from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy nomination. A singer, dancer, actor, and impressionist, Davis recorded over 50 albums and starred in three Broadway shows. He was also a prominent civil rights figure, refusing to play segregated venues and sharing television's first unscripted interracial kiss with Nancy Sinatra in 1967.
